      • Regarding the ratio - we can't draw conclusions from the current usage pattern; there will be more derived data from 2012 will fill our disks, and will change the processing pattern. According to Borut, we need to work towards balancing the cpu/disk.
      • Realize that cannot be achieved on the spot - it will be a gradual change ~ 2 years.
      • Michael and Rob will discuss this with each team, to come up to a plan towards balancing. To set expectations on procurements for sites for this year, and FY13
      • Wei: targets can use both this year's and next year's budget. Ans: yes.
      • Need to keep in mind that CPUs are aging - retirements are happening. Would like to keep more than three generations of processing at Tier 2s.

      • Deployment of multi-core queues; there is a queue at WT2, and seems to be working on it. Wei notes there are brief periods of large memory usage.
        • What are the requirements for a multi-core machine? Multiply by number of cores.
        • 8 logical cores per job slot - focus on this
        • Maximum 50 multicore jobs
        • At BNL, let Condor manage this - do no hard partion

GlideinWMS testing plan (Maxim)

Status of the CERN-based test platform in 2012:

  • CERN-based setup, with APF and other components like schedd pools hosted at CERN
  • voatlas195.cern.ch and voatlas94.cern.ch as schedd pools - 8GB and 24GB of RAM, respectively
  • voatlas195.cern.ch also running the frontend and the APF
  • UCSD glidein factory used throughout the test
  • schedd pool identified as the bottleneck, memory being the main constraint

Expanding the test to the US

  • it was decided to rely on the UCSD gFactory instance because of solid operational support
  • creating a new US based schedd pool was identified as the optimal way to proceed
  • a node was created to support the effort (grid04.racf.bnl.gov) with 12GB of RAM
  • A new instance of APF on the same node (grid04) has been created, to support "local" submission (easier to manage credentials)

Systems involved

Scale of the test

  • with one available US schedd, we can reasonably hope to handle <10**4 jobs
  • target is 50k
  • we won't be able to ramp up within a week or two, until more machines are commissioned and software installed -- thus no immediate large impact
  • need more resources at BNL

Potential impact

  • remember this is a scalability test so failures can be expected by definition
  • assuming roughly 4 schedd machines handling US submission, an outage will be noticeable
  • do we need to go full scale? Can we extrapolate from stressing one schedd with 10 to 20 thousand jobs?

Update on LFC consolidation (Hiro, Patrick, Wei)

last week:
  • From Patrick: Hiro provided me with a dump file of his LFC contents that pertain to my site. This is similar to what is done for the Tier3's. I need to look at the dump and modify/adapt the PandaMover? Cleanse script to delete items from his LFC. I am hoping to look at that this week, since early next week will be lost on the maintenance.
  • Hiro's ddm-l message:
    The following shows the LFC migration steps and current status in detail. 
    1.  Continuous replication of T2 LFC's MySQL to BNL MySQL.
    a.  Need access from BNL.
    b.  The account needs "super" privilege (for triggers)
    c.  rubyrep(http://www.rubyrep.org/)   It will replicate all
    insert/update/delete. The delay is in seconds.
    d. modify trigger in BNL MySQL to record all delete to a separate table 
    (used later time)
    NOTE:  If T2 can't provide me the access to LFC from BNL, the continuous
    replication is not possible.  This will increase the downtime of site
    when LFC is switched. (maybe a day)  Using the continuous update, the
    downtime is very minimum since all records are updated. 
    2.  Update BNL T2 LFC from BNL MySQL
    a.  a script has been created/tested.
    b.  a script will insert all existing entries (in BNL MySQL) to T2 LFC
    at the time of its execution. 
    c.  a separate script will insert any new entries to T2 LFC. It can be
    run many times.
    d.  a separate script will delete any new deletes from T2 LFC (the rows
    from 1.d is used)  It can be run many times.
    3.  Switch LFC
    a.  Change ToA
    b.  Change scheconf
    c.  In the case of continuous migration, there is no need to drain or
    wait for active jobs to finish. 
    d.  In the case of not using continuous migration, we must wait to
    drain, create/transfer MySQL dump, do the step #2, which can take a day.
    4.  Run HC jobs.
    5.  Availability of dump.
    a.  a script has been created.  it can be run daily (or even sooner if
    b.  a script will make a dump, register it to DDM (BNL's SCRATCHDISK)
    and subscribe to T2 (datadisk or maybe scratch) area.  The name of the
    dataset is user.HironoriIto.T2Dump.SITE.DATE_TIME (the file has .db for
    sqlite file)
    c.  The dump includes the following information: guid, lfn, csumtype,
    csumvalue, ctime, filesiz and sfn.
    d.  The format is in sqlite.

    varchar(255), csumtype varchar(2), csumvalue varchar(32), ctime integer,
    fsize integer, sfn text);
    CREATE INDEX ctime on files ('ctime');

    The step 1,2 and 5 in the above have been tested using UTA_SWT2 LFC
    The step 3 and 4 will be tested soon with UTA-SWT2
    The cleanup script will need adjustment for use the a new dump. 
    LFC version. 
    Waiting for the 1.8.4 release which is in EMI certification right
    now.    The version includes an increased number of maximum allowed
    thread from 100 to 1000.
    Meantime, the developer (Ricardo) is trying to port to exiting 1.8.3 for
    testing.   BNL T2 LFC is currently the version
  • Need to test proddisk-cleanse against BNL
  • Turning off SWT2_UTA LFC, testing with HC
  • Okay - discussion lead to WT2 as the next site; will require full downtime to do the Mysql.

  • Waiting for completion of dump script to work from Patrick. Patrick is working on it.
  • Patrick also wants to look at running pandamover cleanup script against BNL's LFC. Will perform a test. Will compare a local to remote test.

    • Deletion errors - but also a known issue, discussed previously
    • New space token at BNL - GROUPTAPE; capacity ~ 2 PB for 20 groups. Michael: there was a large excess of tape from 2011.
    • What about LOCALGROUPDISK? Kaushik notes that tape in ATLAS is archival only, not to be used for analysis.

    1)  7/11 from Rob at MWT2: We had hosts mis-configuration pushed out that caused gatekeeper scheduling problems, resulting in pilot drainage.

    2)  7/12: NET2 DDM deletion errors - ggus 84189 marked 'solved' 7/13, but the errors reappeared on 7/14.  Ticket 'in-progress', eLog 37613/50.

    Update 7/18: No recent failed jobs or DDM deletion errors - ggus 83772 closed, eLog 37743.

    Yuri's summary from the weekly ADCoS meeting:
    1)  7/18: Bob at UM reported an issue with 'voms-proxy-init' from the UM site, but not the MSU one.  Problem was eventually isolated to some LHCONE 
    network configurations.  Issue resolved at the UM campus.  ggus 84349 closed, eLog 37748.
    2)  7/19: SWT2_CPB - file transfers were failing with SRM errors.  Problem was due to a storage server taken off-line when the NIC fan died.  Issue 
    resolved - transfers again succeeding.  eLog 37796.
    3)  7/20: MWT2/UC site - from Marco: It seems there was a network problem at UChicago due to the activation of the LHCONE path.  Not clear why that 
    happened but things are back to normal now.  There may be some failed jobs and transfers involving MWT2 earlier today. Those are due to this network 
    problem, now solved.  eLog 37813.  ggus 84415 was opened during this period for file transfer errors - now closed.
    4)  7/20: ggus ticket 84279 (file transfer failures from CA-VICTORIA-WESTGRID-T2 to ILLINOISHEP) was opened but incorrectly assigned the to CA site 
    on 7/17.  Reassigned to Illinois.  Update from Dave: I believe these errors were caused during routine cleanup of the LFC/SE.  No additional errors have 
    been seen since and the site appears to be working fine.  ggus ticket closed, eLog 37695.
    5)  7/21: Lack of assigned jobs at many US cloud sites.  Issue was due to simulation tasks designated for the US cloud having the 'maxtime' value set too 
    high for the published values at US sites, hence blocking the brokerage.  As a (temporary?) workaround Alden maxtime to zero for US sites.
    6)  7/22: NERSC_SCRATCHDISK file transfer errors ("System error in write: No space left on device").  Armen and Stephane pointed out there is a 
    mismatch between the token size/space between the SRM and dq2.  Also, the latest transfer failures are due to a checksum error.  NERSC admins notified.  
    http://savannah.cern.ch/support/?130509 (Savannah site exclusion), eLog 37840.  ggus 84466 also opened on 7/23 for file transfer failures.  eLog 37882.
    7)  7/22: HU_ATLAS_Tier2 - job failures with the error "pilot: Put error: lfc-mkdir threw an exception: [Errno 3] No such process|Log put error: lfc-mkdir 
    threw an exception."  From John: We are having disk hardware issues with our LFC.  We have all our daily backups and are formulating a plan forward.  
    Later John announced it wasn't possible to save the old LFC host hardware, so a new instance has to be created, restore from a backup, and perform 
    consistency checks.  ggus 84436 in-progress, eLog 37876.
    8)  7/23: SWT2_CPB: another storage server went off-line for the same reason as described in 2) above (NIC fan died).  Fan replaced, host back on-line, 
    and transfers began succeeding.  ggus 84462 / RT 22298 closed, eLog
    9)  7/23: Transfers to UTD_HOTDISK and UTD_LOCALGROUPDISK failing with SRM errors.  ggus 84467 in-progress, eLog 37883.
    10) 7/24: UPENN_LOCALGROUPDISK file transfer errors ("failed to contact on remote SRM [httpg://srm.hep.upenn.edu:8443/srm/v2/server]").  
    ggus 84518 in-progress, eLog 37910.  (Site admin reports the problem has been fixed - can the ticket be closed?)
    11)  7/25: UTA_SWT2_PRODDISK file transfer errors (" [INTERNAL_ERROR] no transfer found for the given ID. Details: error creating file for memmap ...).  
    Issue under investigation.  ggus 84518 in-progress, eLog 37917.
    Follow-ups from earlier reports:

    Update 7/19: Justin at SMU reported the problem was fixed.  No recent errors - ggus 84306 closed.  eLog 37791.

DDM Operations (Hiro)


  • Site names question from Ale about AGIS names?
  • LBNE_DYA - disable for now? Yes.
  • Nebraska - leave as a test site? Yes. But we have an issue with supporting such sites. Kaushik: could send only simple Monte Carlo jobs, using a new feature in Panda.
  • AGLT2_TEST schedconfig issue; test jobs were setup to send only to production sites. HC configuration.

    • 10G perfsonar installation at sites - all sites have it, but not operational everywhere. BNL - this week; SWT2 - negotiating with local networking; SLAC - security issue, classify as appliance.
    • Found and fixed problem with AGLT2 path to non-ESNet sites due to machines in Chicago.
    • LHCONE: circuits setup at MWT2 and AGLT2 and BNL should take preference, primary path; next path would be LHCONE.
    • Michael: dedicated 10G transatlantic for LHCONE traffic between Starlight and Europe (paid by GEANT-DANTE). So available bandwidth to the infrastructure is growing. Up to 60 Gbps (50 is shared). Situation has improved significantly. Demonstrated large bandwidth between small Tier 2 in Italy and BNL. 3X improvement DESY-BNL.

Federated Xrootd deployment in the US (Wei, Ilija)

  • New bi-weekly meeting series including participants from UK, DE and CERN; first meeting this week:
  • First version of dCache 1.9.12.X xrootd N2N plugin deployed at MWT2 (uc & iu) and AGLT2. At DESY Hamburg successfully tested version for dCache 2.2. Problem with dCache 2.0.3-1.
    • stress test of 200 nodes each doing simultaneous access to one random file hits limit of 100 simultaneous connections to LFC
    • two doors are used (one at uc and one at iu), no significant load.
    • as is now no authentication is performed. Problems seen with authentication on when on 1.9.12.X versions of dCache.
    • will try to redo LFC authentication. There is a proposal to move to WebDAV instead.
  • DPM - this is in relatively good shape. There is an issue of providing multi-VO capability.
  • Monitoring - will need publish information from billing database. Would like to have a standard for this.
  • Redirectors being setup at CERN.

    1. EU/UK redirectors are working, both in redundant setup. UK has issues joining UK redirector due to typos in their configuration (wrong port #, ".chi" vs ".ch" etc.). David Smith and Sam Skipsey are checking. SLAC can join both EU and UK redirectors.
    2. Ilija's N2N? works for AGLT2 dCache Xrootd door. We found a bug in dCache Xrootd door (unrelated to N2N? ). Have a workaround. Shawn uploaded the workaround configuration to BNL git repo. AGLT2 is functioning as expected.
    3. Had a discussion with Andy about the relation between US and EU redirectors. Prefer peer-relation due to network latency. Need to work out looping issue. Andy is investigating optimal solutions.
    4. UCSD and CERN (Julia Andreeva) are working (together) on monitoring.

US analysis queue performance (Ilija)

  • Had a meeting last week - some issues were solved, and some new ones have appeared.
  • Considering direct access versus stage-in by site.
  • We observe that when switching modes there is 2 minute stage-out time that seems to be added. Will need to be investigated. Has been in discussion with Paul.
  • Went through all the sites to consider performance. NET2 - Saul will be in touch with Ilija.

Site news and issues (all sites)

  • T1:
    • last meeting(s): not much to report. Over the weekend we have a SE incident - looked like an SRM -to- db communication issue. Still puzzled as to cause. Updating OpenStack? , increasing number of job slots. Adding accounts and auth info to support dynamic creation of Tier3 resources.
    • this meeting: Progress on cloud computing - demonstrated that interfaces to EC2 interfaces are working transparently, accessing Amazon services. Both dedicated and Amazon under a single queue name. Looking at storage technologies, speaking with vendors.

  • AGLT2:
    • last meeting(s): Found network getting hammered after switching to direct access. Updated MSU to SL5.8 + ROCKS 5.5 on all worker nodes. UM will be updated to same set over next couple weeks. Found local 20G link saturated, 2400 to 3100 analy jobs. 4-5GB/sec from pools to wn's. Inter-site traffic work as expected - large pulse when jobs first started up.
    • this meeting: Downtime next Monday. Networking, OSG update, AFS update, remap servers to use 2x10G connections, prep work underway; may need to extend, depending on Juniper stacking at MSU. 20G pipe saturated during HC testing will be upgraded to 4 x 10G. QOS rules will be implemented to separate control from data channels. Simple config - prioritize private network over public.

  • NET2:
    • last meeting(s): Weekend incident - accumulated large number of thread to sites with low-bandwidth. Eventually squeeze out slots for other clients. Failed to get a dbrelease file. Ramp up in planning for move to Holyoke - 2013-Q2. Going to move PBS to OpenGridEngine at BU (checked with Alain that its supported). Direct reading tests from long ago showed GPFS.
    • this meeting:

  • MWT2:
    • last meeting(s): Site in test-mode, requested pilots. Having problems with the submit grid09 - not accepting transfers.
    • this meeting: LHCONE peering attempt last week resulted in production interruption. Working on git change management in front of puppet and intra-MWT2 distribution of worker node-client, certificates, and $APP using a CVMFS repo. Tomorrow scheduled upgrade to MWT2_UC's network to campus core to 20G (two 10G bonded with LCAP). Updates to GPFS servers at UIUC campus cluster. Added two new servers for metadata.

  • SWT2 (UTA):
    • last meeting(s): We have deployed our new worker nodes and our preparing our storage for rollout. We intend to take a downtime on Monday and Tuesday next week to implement a number of delayed maintenance items. OSG upgrade. Swap everything to new UPS. Pressing issue - one of the storage servers went offline; cooling fans on 10G NIC failed.
    • this meeting: Updating switch stack to more current firmware version (Mark). Updated CVMFS and kernels on all compute nodes. Installed OSG 3.x at SWT2_CPB; note: pay attention to accounts to be created. One nagging issue - availability reporting showing as zero. Otherwise things are running well. Bringing 0.5 PB online.

  • SWT2 (OU):
    • last meeting(s):

  • WT2:
    • last meeting(s): Upgraded Bestman to rpm-based installation. SSD's cache created, not sure of its performance; working to separate analysis and production. LFC - database group working on migrating Mysql database from old to new hardware, expect timeouts to be reduced. But now have an ACL problem - used to update hourly for Nurcan's DN; missed those updates for the ADC DN's. LFC versus DDM database comparison.
    • this meeting: WT2: got storage quote from Dell, price are 12% higher than Dell's ATLAS LHC web page (for head nodes and Md1200s). Will ask for an explanation. WT2 operation is OK, LFC stability problem is resolved. Still plan to migrate LFC to BNL in mid-August since SLAC is planning a power outage around that time.
