EgammaD3PDMaker - e/gamma D3PD Maker

Introduction

Development of the EgammaD3PDMaker has currently been under the auspice of the North American e/gamma group centered at BNL. Work on the EgammaD3PDMaker was begun by Lauren Tompkins of Berkley. The work is currently being carried on by Julia Gray of Stony Brook University and Jim Cochran, Tim Kutnink, and Suyog Shrestha of Iowa State University. Support is being provided by the North American e/gamma leaders Jaehoon Yun and Scott Snyder.

E/gamma D3PD Making Tool

The goal of the EgammaD3PDMaker package is to provide D3PD’s available to the e/gamma effort at large to aid in efficient and expeditious studies of various physics analyses, especially in anticipation of data.

The EgammaD3PDMaker also aims to provide a uniform structure of D3PD’s used in analyses involving e/gamma objects to better aid in comparison studies.

Package Availability

All installation procedures reflect the procedure for obtaining the newest stable version of the package.

The package is currently available to the e/gamma group through the personal CVS area of Julia Gray and the EGammaPoolDisk. It may also be found in Julia Gray’s personal workarea at BNL.

There are separate procedures for installing the package, and each procedure is outlined below.

Installation

There are several methods of package installation at the moment until the package becomes available in the public CVS system. Depending on your personal area set up and whether working at BNL or CERN, one method or another may prove to be more convenient.

After copying the package from one area or the other, the package itself must be compiled. Make sure you are working in your version 14 environment. Change directories to the EgammaD3PDMaker/cmt folder, and type the following commands:

cmt bro cmt config
cmt bro gmake

Private CVS

If your CVSROOT points to the CERN CVS, the package can be checked out from Julia Gray’s personal CVS area via the command:

cmt co users/novak/EgammaD3PDMaker

EGammaPoolDisk

The EGammaPoolDisk? has now been updated with the newest version of the package. This method is now available for obtaining the newest version of the package.

A copy of the EgammaD3PDMaker package is stored on the EGammaPoolDisk. It is suggested to use this package with Athena 14.5.0. Other versions of the package exist for earlier versions of Athena, but they do not contain the option to set the default number of objects to more than 0. To use this method of installation, first create in your area the following folders:

BNL Account Area

Stable versions of the package can be found in Julia Gray’s personal workarea at BNL. Releases are presently available for Athena 14.2.20, 14.2.25, and 14.5.0. It is suggested to use 14.5.0, and this release should be backwards compatible for datasets reconstructed in earlier versions of Athena.

EgammaD3PDMaker package is stored in Julia Gray’s personal workarea at BNL. To use this method of installation, first create in your area the following folders:

The package was developed in Athena v.14.5.0. The package should work in all earlier versions, but backward compatibility cannot be guaranteed.

Lists for the packages and their tags needed to run in earlier versions of the code can be found in a text file stored along with the package on the EGammaPoolDisk and on my workarea at BNL.

Runtime

The time taken to produce rootuples averaged about 10min/AOD with 250 events. The samples had an average of 1.5k/evt without truth information and 2.2k/evt with truth information. This gave a processing speed for AOD’s of about about 250k/evt.

Waruna Fernando also did some processing time studies using a Z-> e + mu dataset. He found an average rate of 120sec/3500 events(Z e+mu) for AOD’s, 9 sec/3500 events using ROOT, and 4 msec/evt using PROOF.

Validation

Validation work will continue at the June Jamboree at BNL. Please see closing talks from the Jamboree for details.

Future Plans

This package is currently being integrated into the standard D3PD making package for CERN. It will bring uniformity and ease of analysis to ATLAS, and there is a large support group to keep the package well-maintained.

Known Issues

These issues are for older versions of the package and have not been observed to be a problem for the version running in Athena 14.5.0 working with the recommended packages.

There is a known issue running with the UseTriggerFilter=True and UseTriggerObject=True. It is believed that these issues are caused by problems with the trigger information in v.14.2.20, so using a higher version 14 may resolve these issues.

In EventViewBuilder/EventViewInserters/python, the file egammaPID.py is missing some objects such as PhotonTight. If you get an error like "Can’t find object PhotonTight" then you may need to install a more updated version of EventViewInserters. The problem should be fixed in EventViewInserters-14-05-00.

There are some minor issues that surfaced doing a 1.4 million event run at the Argonne Tier3. The first is that if you follow the prescription you likely will run across a problem where useTRT is not declared in the more recent versions of the code, but is referenced in the joboptions files. The resolution is to remove the reference in the JO file. Another issue is that if the recommended versions are used there is an inconsistency in the location of the egammaEvent package for earlier releases. You may need to modify the requirements file in PhysicsAnalysis/EventViewBuilder/EventViewInserters to read:

D3PD? ’s Available

A sampling of datasets were run over with the newest version of the package. These new D3PD? 's are stored in several areas to allow for access from BNL and CERN. The D3PD? 's can be accessed from the Panda server and on the EGammaPoolDisk. The procedure for accessing these D3PD? 's from each area is detailed below.

Datasets were run over and D3PD’s were produced in preparation for the BNL June 2009 Jamboree. The datasets were chosen for validation purposes and with the interests of the Jamboree participants in mind.

The resulting D3PD’s are now available to the collaboration at large. If you have a request for a new D3PD to be produced from a dataset not represented here, please contact Julia Gray (julia.ann.gray@cern.ch). Requests for specific datasets instead of datasample types are easier to process. There is currently a dedicated D3PD production team consisting of Julia Gray, Tim Kutnink, and Suyog Shrestha.

To access a file stored on Panda , a grid certificate is needed as well as an area set up to access dq2 commands. To utilize dq2, see the CERN Twiki article DQ2Clients.

Once an area is set up to utilize dq2 clients, the datasets stored on Panda can be accessed via the command:

dq2-get [panda_filename]

where the Panda filename is supplied below.
