Analysis Jamboree
Introduction
As part of the US ATLAS Analysis Support Center activities, we are organizing two analysis working weeks (jamborees) this summer at BNL. These
jamboreess are designed to provide a working environment on site with
experts on software, trigger and detector performance. The participants
are expected to spend most of the time working an analysis topic of
their interest, taking advantage of the interactions with the experts
present during the week. We will provide some tutorial for the
beginners, then they would team up with other participants and experts
to work on real analysis topics. The analysis week distinguishes
itself from previous meetings (tutorials, workshops) in the sense
that participants are expected to do analysis code development, and
advance toward certain goals of the analysis topics.
Dates and Agenda Outline
The dates for the two sessions are
June 5-9
Aug 21-25
In the June week, the analysis topics should make use of the csc11
production (the on-going MC event production), while the August
week will hopefully focus on the analysis of the csc12 production
(to be produced by release 12 starting in June(?) ) . We will make
sure the datasets of interest are available at BNL, as well as
the computing resources.
The agenda for the Jamboree in June can be found here
The agenda for the Jamboree in August can be found here
The tentative agenda for the Jamboree in August is as follows:
- Start on Monday (Aug 21) morning: the first day to cover the organization, basic tutorials, and some advanced topics
- Tuesday-Thursday: Morning discussions on physics and analysis tools (~2 hours), Working sessions the rest
- Friday (Aug 25) morning: summary and discussions
The participants are welcome to stay longer at BNL if they find
it beneficial, but please check the availability of personnel you
intend to interact with.
We hope that this environment would provide an added benefit for
bringing collaborators of similar physics interests to work together,
not just at the Analysis Week, but thereafter as well.
If you are interested to participate, please let us know what
specific topics are of interest to you, and any special requirements on
the working environment (datasets, experts, computing resources etc).
The CSC analysis topics of the physics and combined performance groups are documented by this page CSCSpreadSheet.
If you are relatively new to ATLAS, and not familiar with the analysis software, we suggest you follow the existing tutorials provided by the Physics Analysis Tools group. The most recent tutorial designed for USATLAS is this one USATLASAnalysisTutorial1105.
We intent to make the CSC11 AOD datasets available at the Tier-1 center. Together with the distributed analysis tool (pathena) , this should allow us to process many of the datasets.
Location
The meeting will take place in BNL Physics Department, Building 510A, Room 2-84 for general meeting, and additional space for breakout sessions in Room 1-105 and Room 1-113 in the same building.
Please refer to the BNL Map for directions to lab and the physics department.
Network connections
- Wireless is outside the BNL firewall: Network name: VWZ. It should cover most of Bldg 510, and should be common for upstairs and downstairs
- A few wired connections (inside firewall) are available in room 2-84, and 1-105. You need to set http proxy in the web browser after register, go to http://www.bnl.gov/cybersecurity/www.asp for instruction.
- Register your computer: When connected first time, you need to register your laptop. Web browser will be directed to the registration page. Please use your BNL Guest number, fill out the form, and follow instructions.
Registration
We require a registration for these Analysis Jamborees because space is limited, and we would like to know in advance the required expertise and environment for the activities during the weeks. There is no registration fees, but please send e-mail to Hong Ma (hma@bnl.gov) with cc to Linda Feierabend (feierabe@bnl.gov), notifying your attendance. Please let us know the dates of your visit and if you hold a BNL guest appointment.
Attendees who already hold a valid BNL Guest Badge may come on site without notification to the main gate. Attendees who already have approved guest appointments, but not a Guest Badge will have to notify the BNL main gate of their arrival.
All others must apply for the BNL guest appointment by completing the Brookhaven's Guest Registration Form well in advance of the meeting. You will be notified when the guest appointment is approved. Obtaining a BNL computer account at USATLAS Tier-1 also requires an approved guest appointment. When you arrive at BNL with the approved guest appointment for the first time, you must stop at the security office by the main entrance where you will be issued a temporary pass, then proceed to the RHIC/AGS Users' Office to complete the check-in procedure.
NON-US citizens without BNL guest appointment should complete the registration form as soon as possible, since it takes additional time for the approval process, especially for people from sensitive countries.
