Storage Tuning checklist

For maximum performance the following settings are recommended

  • Install UL kernel with CONFIG_PREEMPT_NONE=y for IO throughput enhancement
  • Install srvadmin-all 7.0 which is required to work with the newest kernel
  • upgrade RAID firmware to resolve reported by nagios-plugins-openmanage-3.7.5-1.el5.x86_64
  • build raids6's with Adaptive Read Ahead, Force Write Back, Disk Cache Policy Enabled, 512k stripe
  • blockdev --setra 10240 /dev/sdX
  • noop scheduler for IO: echo noop > /sys/block/sdX/queue/scheduler
  • queuelen tuning for 10g: /sbin/ifconfig eth4 txqueuelen 10000
  • interrupt tuning for 10g: myricom /usr/local/bin/msixbind.sh eth4 ixgbe /usr/local/bin/set_irq_affinity.sh eth4
  • use SUN jdk-1.6.0_31-fcs.x86_64 to enable java heap memory graphing
  • use 2012 Java Flags to tune garbage collection and enable snmp monitoring
  • use sysctl.conf for snodes with this puppet class: sysctl::mwt2::snode
