DiningNearBNL - Brief guide to some dining options near BNL

In no particular order

Please add your own experiences to the list.

  • The Brookhaven Center has a small pub that is open in the evenings. If you're on site and you need a quick bite and a beer, it's not too bad.
  • Varney's. 2109 Montauk Highway, Brookhaven.
    • Looks like a shabby truck stop from the outside, but serves good seafood. Good selection of beers on tap. Prices are reasonable. If you're in the mood for a bucket of mussels, this could be the place for you. Service can be slow at times, though.
  • Oceans5. Shoreham Plaza in Shorham.
    • Fresh seafood, getting good reviews. Lounge with wide-screen TV's.
  • Benten. 971 New York 25A, Miller Place, NY 11764-2750, (631) 209-2414
    • An old standby for Japanese food near BNL.
  • Lotus East II. 331 Route 25a, Mount Sinai.
    • Decent Chinese about 20 minutes drive from BNL. Although located in a strip-mall, it is more upscale than the typical strip-mall Chinese restaurant, while prices remain reasonable.
  • La Plage. 131 Creek Rd., Wading River.
    • Fine-dining that's closest to BNL, but be prepared to pay. Right on the beach at Wading River. A short walk brings you the view of the built-but-never-operated Shoreham nuclear power plant.
  • Chachama Grill. 655 Montauk Highway, East Patchogue.
    • Another fine-dining nouveau americain establishment relatively close to the lab. Again, be prepared to pay, although if you go before 6pm there is a 3-course prix-fixe dinner that's more affordable.
  • Orto. 90 North Country Rd., Miller Place.
    • More fine dining. Prix fixe menu is reported to be quite good.
  • Windmill Diner. 530 William Floyd Pkwy, Shirley.
    • Once in your life you should experience the Long Island Diner (and once is probably enough), just to say that you have done it. Though probably not the best example, the Windmill is one of the closest to the lab.
  • Gracie's. Broadway and Prince Road, Rocky Point.
    • Basic, decent food.
  • King's Buffet, 3251 Horseblock Road, Medford.
    • Buffet-style all-you-can-eat Chinese (and some sushi). Nice for a cheap, but decent, lunch.
  • Brick House Brewery. Main Street, Patchogue.
    • Fine beer, decent food, and (often) live entertainment.
  • Pasta Pasta. 234 East Main Street, Port Jefferson.
    • Fine Italian, but on the expensive side. Port Jeff is a pleasant village on Long Island Sound; the ferry for Bridgeport (CT) departs from here.
  • Salsa Salsa. 142 Main Street, Port Jefferson.
    • Burrito bar, mainly for takeout.
  • Pita House. 680 Medford Ave., Patchogue.
    • Decent and relatively inexpensive Turkish.
  • Blackwell's. 141 Fairway Dr., Wading River.
    • Most recent report is from Apr 09, but the claim is that the prix fixe menu and the steaks are quite good.
  • Kotobuki, 377 Smithtown Bypass, Hauppauge.
    • Best sushi in the immediate area, in my opinion (G.R.). A little farther than most restaurants on this list (~35 min from BNL). They don't take reservations so be prepared to wait, especially on a weekend.
  • Sen, 23 Main Street, Sag Harbor.
    • Personally have not been there, but is reported to be good (and probably expensive). A bit far, but Sag Harbor is an interesting former whaling town. Maybe combine a trip there with an outing of (movie)star-gazing in the Hamptons?
  • Spiro's Lounge 4 Patchogue Drive, Rocky Point
    • Recent report claims great food in a relaxing atmosphere (choose to dine in either lounge off a Pub Bar Menu or main dining room)
