PPDG is developing and integrating Grid-enabled tools for data
intensive distributed computing into production quality end-to-end
distributed computing solutions for HENP experiments.
PPDG is a collaboration of physicists with computer scientists
working at the forefront of Grid technologies.
BNL is the lead institution for PPDG involvement in the ATLAS (LHC)
and STAR (RHIC) experiments.
Activities
- PPDG in ATLAS
- Magda - Distributed data manager prototype
The PAS group is developing Magda as the distributed data manager to be deployed to meet
the principal year 1 PPDG deliverable of a production distributed data management system
serving the US ATLAS Tier 1 center at BNL, CERN, and many US ATLAS grid testbed sites.
- Datasets
Datasets are used for locating and accessing event data samples. We are
developing requirements, design and implementation(s) to support distributed
production and analysis.
- DIAL
DIAL will enable distributed interactive analysis of large datasets.
It is being developed to provide ATLAS with a useful tool for analyzing event data
from current and upcoming data challenges. In the context of PPDG CS-11, it is used to
define grid requirements and identify common tools for interactive analysis.
- Data history
A full specification or 'signature' of a data set that is complete enough
to (at least in principle) regenerate it is required both to unambiguously
discriminate the data set from others and to allow 'virtual data' mechanisms
to regenerate it. We are working on the 'data histories' which will implement this.
